Stroggili is an inland, old village, built during the 16th century by Cretan colonists which were brought to the island by the Venetians in order to increase its population. It is built on the slopes of Mt. Panayia, in a verdant location, above the settlement of Agios Ioannis Peristeron. It was in Strogilli where the poet of the School of the Ionian Islands, Gerasimos Markoras mostly lived. In the village, his ancestral home still remains intact with furniture and his personal items, such as his office and many manuscripts.
